Often a victim of financial abuse doesn’t even realize that a form of abuse is taking place.
Money becomes a tool by which the abuser can control the victim. The abuse involves making a victim financially dependant on them, while denying them the right or ability to earn money.
Signs of financial abuse:
- Selling of shared property eg. Houses, livestock or any premises without the full consent of the victim
- Accessing a joint bank account for personal use without the consent of the victim
- Preventing the victim from being employed or earning an income
- Employing the victim without a salary
- Forcing you to beg or commit crimes in order to get money
If you, or someone you know, is suffering from such abuse, contact your nearest LifeLine Centre, or the Stop Gender Violence Helpline on 0800-150-150.
