
In 1999, the National Stop Women Abuse Helpline was initated by Soul City and the National Network on Violence Against Women, in partnership with LifeLine Southern Africa.
In 2004, the Line was formally broadened to incorporate issued of both sexes and was reflected in the change ofthe line's name to Stop Gender Violence Helpline.
Annually, the Line provides anonymous, confidential and accesible telephonic information, counselling and refferals, in all 11 official languages to over 180 000 survivors, witnesses and perpetrators of gender-based violence.
Today, the Stop Gender Violence Helpline exists as a partnership project with the Telkmon Foundation, Sasol, Soul City, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, the Department of Public Enterprise and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
